The National University of Mar del Plata (UNMdP) was created on September 30thof 1975, after an agreement between the Ministry of Culture and Education of the Nation and the government of Buenos Aires province. Its community comprises more than 30,000 students, 580 research scholars, 835 university workers, 3270 teachers and thousands of graduates.

With more than 50 years of history, UNMdP is recognized as one of the most important institutions in the country offering 63 undergraduate and more than 50 postgraduate careers.

The National University of Mar del Plata is a public, autonomous, free and co-governed institution. It stands out in research by 11 institutes and 16 research centers, 8 of which have double dependence with CONICET, including INTEMA, the largest in Argentina. There are currently 450 research groups.

The University is highly committed to the local and regional community, through extension and transfer activities. The UNMdP has 9 University Extension Centers strategically distributed in the city, 50 Extension Projects and 75 Activities that promote and enhance links between the institution and the environment.

The university comprises 10 academic units:

  • Architecture, Urban Planning, and Design
  • Agricultural Sciences
  • Health Sciences and Social Work
  • Economic and Social Sciences
  • Exact and Natural Sciences
  • Law
  • Humanities
  • Engineering
  • Psychology
  • Higher School of Medicine.

UNMdP includes also a pre-university institution, the National College Dr. Arturo U. Illia.
